Case Study: Critical Pipeline Rehabilitation in a Cardiac Operating Theatre

Project Overview

ORSCO was called to investigate a persistent leak threatening the integrity of a hospital’s only cardiac operating theatre. In such a high-stakes environment, even minor disruptions could pose serious risks to life-saving procedures.

Investigation & Findings
Upon conducting a thorough CCTV pipe inspection, our team identified severely corroded and deteriorated stormwater downpipes spanning from the roof of the 3rd floor to the 1st floor. The internal pipe walls exhibited extensive oxidation, leading to compromised structural integrity and potential failure points.

Traditional repair methods, such as pipe replacement, were not viable due to the hospital’s operational demands and the invasive nature of conventional excavation and demolition. A trenchless, non-disruptive solution was required to restore the pipeline without affecting critical hospital functions.

Solution: CIPP Rehabilitation Using NuFlow Technology
To restore the pipeline’s functionality and longevity, ORSCO recommended Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) rehabilitation using NuFlow’s advanced trenchless technology.

Preparation & Cleaning Process

Before lining installation, our team conducted:

•             High-pressure water jetting to clear debris and loose corrosion.

•             Mechanical descaling to remove built-up rust and restore pipe diameter.

•             Final CCTV inspection to verify a clean and obstruction-free pipeline.

Liner Installation
2 x 8.5m DN100 300GSM needle-felt liner was selected for installation. This liner, impregnated with a specially formulated epoxy resin, was pulled into the existing pipe using pip technology. Once in place, the liner was cured in place to create a seamless, structural, and corrosion-resistant pipe within a pipe.Quality Assurance & Final Inspection

•             A post-installation CCTV inspection was conducted to verify proper liner expansion, curing, and adhesion to the host pipe.

•             The newly rehabilitated pipeline was tested for flow efficiency and structural integrity.

Results & Impact

•             The stormwater drainage system was fully restored without any invasive construction.

•             The cardiac operating theater remained fully operational throughout the process.
       •             The hospital avoided costly downtime, structural modifications, and patient disruptions.

•             The CIPP liner provided a 50+ year lifespan, ensuring long-term reliability and performance.
