Case Study - old standard bank building

Inside-Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project

Industry / Market: Commercial / Facility Management, JHB

Situation: Nu Flow was called out to unblock a couple of full-bore pipelines on the roof of the old Standard Bank building in Johannesburg. After Cleaning and inspection, the true scale of the damage was revealed to the client, and the scope of work increased.

The pipe blockages caused numerous pinprick holes along the length of four pipes running horizontally along the roof and vertically down the stormwater downpipes eight floors to the basement. The pipes had been poorly maintained, with no service plan in evidence, resulting in leaks through the pinprick holes which in turn damaged electrical wiring on the 7th floor.

Solution: Using Nu flows patented structural liner, which was inflated in-situ with the pipeline and steamed, steadily curing it within 20 to 30 minutes as the temperature of the liner rises to 60°C. The epoxy liner installed in the pipes’ interior will seal and protect the system from further deterioration, dramatically extending the life of the piping systems.

The End Result: The pipe is rehabilitated to a better-than-new condition, with an increased flow rate, eliminated weakened joints, and sealed cracks.
